VALLETTA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Malta International Airport announced on Wednesday that 2016 had seen a 10 percent increase in passenger traffic compared with 2015, passing the 5 million milestone last December.
The forecast for 2017 is even more positive, with passenger movement expected to reach 5.2 million.
The year 2016 also saw a 4.5 percent growth in aircraft movements and a 7.6 percent increase in seat capacity.
The airport's CEO Alan Borg said; "With the phenomenal growth experienced last year, and a new milestone under our belt, we share this success with all our airport stakeholders and employees who have worked so hard to make this happen."
"Looking forward, we must not underestimate the responsibility these numbers bring with them and while 2017's prospects are positive, we must retain our focus on three priorities: service excellence, sustainability and investment," said Borg.
The top market growth in 2016 was Spain, with a registered growth of 26.7 percent, followed by Italy with a growth of 15 percent.
Malta's Tourism Minister Edward Zammit Lewis noted: "The record-breaking figures in passenger movements registered last year certify, and are aligned with, the success we are currently achieving within the tourism sector." Enditem
