Iceland's new coalition gov't takes office

OSLO, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Iceland's new center-right coalition government took office on Wednesday with Independence Party chairman Bjarni Benediktsson as prime minister, Icelandic public broadcaster RUV reported.

The Independence Party, the Reform Party and Bright Future have agreed to form a coalition government more than two months after the country held its parliamentary election.

The 11-strong new cabinet has seven men and four women. The Independence Party has six ministerial seats, including the office of the prime minister, while the Reform Party has three and Bright Future gets two.

Reform Party chief Benedikt Johannesson serves as minister of finance while Bright Future leader Ottarr Proppe takes over as minister of health.

Independence Party lawmaker Gudlaugur Thor Thordarson, who was minister of health from 2007 until 2009, becomes minister of foreign affairs.

The Independence Party took a strong lead by securing 21 out of the 63 seats in parliament after winning 29 percent of the ballots cast in the Oct. 29 election.

Together, the three-party coalition holds a slim majority with 32 seats in parliament.
