Banks, insurance stocks boost Kenya bourse trading as bear-run persists

NAIROBI, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) turnover on Wednesday rose to 5.8 million U.S. dollars on a volume of 26 million shares from the previous session's 17 million worth 4.3 million dollars, lifted by insurance, banks and telecom stocks.

Safaricom, Kenya's leading telecom, traded 16 million shares up from 14 million in the previous session, at a declined price of 0.17 dollars.

The insurance sector had 4.2 million shares moved, which represented 16 percent of the day's traded volume, with Kenya-Re actively transacting 4 million shares of the total at 0.22 dollars.

The banking sector had 3.4 million shares traded to account for 13 percent of the day's volume. Kenya Commercial Bank was the most heavily traded counter in the sector with 2.9 million shares changing hands at 0.27 dollars.

Mumias Sugar transacted a volume of 1.2 million shares at 0.01 dollars out of the 1.6 million shares moved in the manufacturing sector.

However, the bear-run at the market continued as 14 stocks fell by between 1 and 5 percent pushing down the NSE 20 Share Index 36 points to settle at 3,047.68.

Similarly, the All Share Index (NASI) shed 1.46 points to settle at 125.76 while the NSE 25 Share Index shaved-off 43.85 points to settle at 3,302.98. Enditem
