ISTANBUL, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- A Kurdish militant group on Wednesday claimed responsibility for a car bombing attack in Turkey's western city of Izmir, in which four were killed, local media reported.

The Kurdistan Freedom Hawks (TAK) said it carried out the attack near a police checkpoint of a courthouse in Izmir on Jan. 5, the Hurriyet daily said.

An exchange of gunfire erupted between two gunmen and the police officers, after the gunmen's explosive-laden vehicle was prevented from entering the parking lot, leaving one officer and one courthouse employee killed along with the militants.

Nine other people, including two police officers, were reportedly wounded in the clashes. The gunmen detonated their car, but the blast caused no casualties, press reports said.

The TAK, a group linked to the Kurdistan Workers' Party outlawed by Ankara, has previously claimed responsibility for other deadly attacks inside Turkey.
