NANNING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Customs authorities in Nanning City, capital of south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, busted two frozen meat smuggling cases at the beginning of 2017, nabbing 17 suspects and seizing about 20,000 tonnes of frozen meat.

Initial investigation showed that in one case, the suspects smuggled over 10,000 tonnes of frozen meat, including pork, chicken and beef worth about 100 million yuan (14.4 million U.S. dollars) from Vietnam to the cities of Nanning and Changsha, customs said Wednesday.

In the other case, customs seized 10,000 tonnes of frozen meat worth 120 million yuan. The meat included a shipment of beef bought from India which was later delivered to Vietnam and then smuggled to Guangxi via the Dongxing Port, before being transported to southwest China's Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality.

Peng Jiangping, an official with the customs, said that they dispatched more than 130 police in the raid on Jan. 6 and arrested the suspects in the cities of Nanning, Fangchenggang, Qinzhou and Beihai in Guangxi and Maoming City in Guangdong Province.

The cases are under further investigation.
