VIENNA, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Austrian authorities on Tuesday apprehended two further suspects in relation to a spate of sexual assaults that occurred in the city of Innsbruck during the recent New Year's Eve celebrations, Kurier newspaper reported.

Police released photos of the two men on Monday, following which the two suspects voluntarily turned themselves in. A Syrian national, 19, and a 30-year-old Iraqi national, both asylum seekers, acknowledged having been at the celebrations in the city center, but denied having committed any sexual assaults.

Their questioning by police follows that of six Afghan nationals on Monday who were accused of having groped 18 women during the evening. They have since been released from custody with no foreseeable jail time.

In response to the assaults, interior minister Wolfgang Sobotka called on the Austrian public to become more engaged in preventing such incidences from happening. Enditem
