Tokyo shares close lower on strong yen

TOKYO, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo shares closed lower Tuesday on the stronger yen ahead of a news conference to be held by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump the next day.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended down 152.89 points, or 0.79 percent, from Friday at 19,301.44. Tokyo markets were closed Monday for a national holiday.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange finished 11.01 points, or 0.71 percent, lower at 1,542.31.

Decliners were led by insurance, electric power and gas, and mining issues.

The day's turnover was around 2,599.2 billion yen (22.51 billion U.S. dollars).
