HANOI, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's Ministry of Environmental and Natural Resources (MoNRE) will inspect projects of high potential for causing severe environmental pollution in 2017, local Vietnam News online newspaper reported on Tuesday.

According to a decision newly issued by MoNRE Minister Tran Hong Ha, leaders of cities and provinces are required to collaborate to conduct inspections under the radar in sectors including textile dyeing, metallurgy and production of chemicals, paper, pulp, cassava, rubber, sugarcane, leather and thermal power.

The MoNRE, along with provinces and cities, will inspect all industrial units that discharge 200 cubic meters or more of waste water, except those that have already been inspected in 2016.

Last year, Vietnam experienced severe environmental incidents including mass fish deaths in central coastal localities caused by a steel company during its trial operation when waste water with toxics exceeding allowed level were discharged into the sea.
