TIRANA, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The former mayor of Kavaja in central Albania, Elvis Roshi, addressed Monday Albania's Constitutional Court asking the nullification the Central Elections Commission decision stripping him of the official mandate under the decriminalization law.
Roshi's lawyer, Theodhori Sollaku told reporters Monday that the request of Kavaja Mayor is related to the decisions of the institutions that authorized the Council of Ministers to dismiss the mayor after the procedures followed by elections body.
Roshi's lawyer said the government decision went against the principles of European Convention of Human Rights and the Constitution of the Republic of Albania in particular.
Elections body stripped Elvis Roshi of his mandate at the request of Prosecution Office on Dec. 29, 2019 following accusations of hiding criminal records in the past.
CEC has also striped of the mandate two lawmakers, Shkelqim Selami and Dashamir Tahiri, at the request of prosecution office as subjects of the decriminalization law.
The two MPs had previously filed a complaint at the Constitutional Court.
The implementation of decriminalization law is deemed as a main condition for the elections of June 18 as it aims at keeping away from public posts all those who have connections with crime or those convicted in the past for different crimes.
