NEW DELHI, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Five people were killed and four others injured on Monday after a speeding car hit people on road in northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, officials said.

The accident took place at Jigna in Mirzapur district, about 288 km southwest of Lucknow, the capital city of Uttar Pradesh.

"In a road accident this morning on Mirzapur-Allahabad road near Jigna market five people were killed and four others injured after an uncontrolled SUV rammed into them," a police official posted in Mirzapur district said.

"These people were pushing another vehicle which had stopped along the road due to some technical snag."

According to police, three people were killed on the spot while two others succumbed in hospital.

"The remaining four are being treated in the hospital," the official said.

Police have arrested the driver of SUV and seized the vehicle.

Deadly road accidents are common in India and often caused due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.

India's ministry of road transport said in 2015 that 146,133 people were killed and 500,279 others injured in 501,423 road accidents across the country.

Global Road Safety Report - 2015 released by WHO last year, however, said India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents.
