DAR ES SALAAM, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian authorities said Monday 200 people had been jailed in 2016 for illegally possessing government trophies, including ivory.
Biswalo Mganga, the East African nation's Director of Public Prosecution, said the 200 people were serving jail terms between 15 and 20 years after they had failed to pay fines.
Mganga revealed this on the sidelines of a four-day training for conservationists from across the country who are meeting in Morogoro region.
"We still have work to do to fight poaching and theft of government trophies," said Mganga.
Gaudence Milanzi, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, said a lot of efforts were being instituted by the government in fighting poaching.
He said poaching has declined in recent days and that most of the seized trophies were from the past poaching incidents. Enditem
