Myanmar gov't investigates attacks on Myanmar workers in Malaysia

YANGON, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's government said Monday it was investigating into a recent attack on Myanmar workers in Malaysia in cooperation with the Malaysian authorities.

A total of 15 Myanmar workers were attacked on Thursday by four masked assailants when they left overtime work at the factory of Elecol Switchgear in Serdang, according to official media's report Monday.

Four workers were killed on the spot and one of the three injured also died on the way to hospital.

U Myo Aung, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Immigration and Population, said that seven Myanmar workers from the factory were being kept in police custody for questioning.

The Myanmar authorities have stopped sending workers to Malaysia as a response, said U Zaw Htay, spokesperson for the presidential office, urging illegal workers to contact the embassy for safety.

Altogether 30 Myanmar workers were working at the factory and 15 of them were undocumented.
