Mainland extends condolences over death of Taiwan politician

BEIJING, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese mainland on Monday expressed condolences over the death of Chin Ching-sheng, secretary-general of Taiwan's People First Party.

"We deeply regret and mourn the passing of Mr. Chin Ching-sheng," said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesperson for the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office.

Chin devoted himself to cross-Strait exchanges and cooperation, and contributed greatly to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations, Ma said.

Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, has sent a message of condolences to Chin's family, Ma said.

Chin died at the age of 70 on Sunday, according to Taiwan media.
