PARIS, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- France's landmark Louvre Museum received 7.3 million visitors in 2016, down by 15 percent from a year earlier, as a series of terror attacks struck the French capital in the year, data released by Louvre Museum showed on Thursday.
"In context of sharp decline of foreign visitors (number), due to security risks, Louvre received less visitors," the museum said in a statement.
School visitors declined sharply by 28.4 percent amid the persistent high alert, while the number of French visitors was stable at 2 million, according to the statement.
"But the rate of visitors appreciation increases mainly due to implemented action to improve visitors' welcome," it added.
Figures from the museum show that about 70 percent of visitors said they were satisfied with their visit to the one of the world's largest museums and France's main historic monument, an obvious increase from the 53 percent recorded in 2015.
In 2016, Louvre Museum remained the main visited French site by foreign tourists, with those from the United States taking the biggest share, followed by tourists from China, Spain and Italy.
