BANGKOK, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- A Kachin exile group in northern Thailand on Thursday repeated its call on the Myanmar government to realize ceasefire with ethic Kachin rebels.
About 50 members of the Kachin exile group who currently reside in Chiang Mai, about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok, peacefully gathered outside the Myanmar consular office in the northern Thai province to repeat its call for the ceasefire.
In a letter of petition submitted to the Myanmar consular office, the Kachin exile group alleged that Myanmar government forces had attacked Kachin Independence Army positions in Kachin state and part of the neighboring Shan state only to inflict casualties among local villagers, including children.
In particular, the Kachin petitioners urged Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi to see to it that the Myanmar government troops will effectually cease fire with the Kachin rebels.
The group said it had lodged similar complaints earlier to the Myanmar government but nothing has been done to meet its demands as yet.
More than 100,000 people of ethnic minorities in Myanmar fled armed conflicts in their country and are currently given shelter in nine refugees camps in neighboring Thailand.
