MOGADISHU, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) -- A car explosion rocked a UN compound in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, injuring four security guards, police said.

Mogadishu police chief Bishaar Abshir Geedi confirmed the incident, saying a car parked near the compound run by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) exploded.

An unnamed security official told Xinhua that all of the injured were Somali citizens, including the UNDP Somalia office's security commander, Abdi Ali.

The circumstances under which the vehicle accessed the heavily fortified compound remain unknown.

Security officers conducted an operation in areas around the UNDP premises after the blast and detained nine suspected members of Somalia-based extremist group Al-Shabaab for alleged involvement in the car explosion.

The explosion comes barely two days after a twin car bomb attack claimed by Al-Shabaab killed at least two people near the UN base in Mogadishu.

Al-Shabaab militants launched an ambush on the UNDP compound in Mogadishu in June 2013, killing 15 people.

The group has carried out frequent attacks in Somalia, many of them in Mogadishu, in its decade-long fight against the government.
