RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- Brazil's President Michel Temer on Tuesday wished Antonio Guterres, the new UN secretary-general, best luck and praised his accomplishments in his career.

In his Twitter account, the Brazilian president congratulated the inauguration of the first UN secretary-general from a Portuguese-speaking country.

"For years, Antonio Guterres dedicated himself to the resolution of conflicts and to the support to refugees. May his ability to lead and dialogue inspire him at the helm of the United Nations," the Brazilian president said.

Antonio Guterres, former prime minister of Portugal, started his first day of work as the UN secretary-general Tuesday in New York and made a speech to UN workers, saying that the UN must be ready to attend to the world's demands.

Also through Twitter, Temer extended his wishes to Brazilian diplomat Maria Luiza Viotti, who was announced as Guterres's chief of staff.

Viotti previously served as undersecretary for the Asia Pacific in Brazilian Foreign Ministry. She is among the three women nominated by Guterres to top UN leadership posts.
