MADRID, Jan. 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1,155 people lost their lives in accidents on Spanish roads in 2016, according to figures published by the Spanish General Direction of Traffic (DRT) on Tuesday.

The DRT reported that there were a total of 1,033 different accidents.

The year 2015 saw 1,134 people die in road accidents, while there were 1,132 deaths in 2014 and 1,134 in 2013.

The figure last year was still way below the 3,993 deaths registered in 2003 when the points system on driving licenses was introduced, or 1989 which saw a record 5,940 deaths in road accidents.

The introduction of points system on driving licenses and a reform to toughen the penal code for driving offenses have helped improve road safety in the country in recent years.
