KAMPALA, Jan. 2 (Xinhua) -- Uganda's oldest and top university Makerere University on Monday opened for classes after a two-month shutdown over a lecturers' strike.
John Ddumba-Ssentamu, vice chancellor of the university, said in a letter to staff and students that work and lectures should resume immediately.
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni closed the university on Nov. 1 following a demonstration by the students over a resolution by lecturers to continue their sit-down strike.
Police and students were involved in running battles as the students demanded that the lectures resume.
The university has had a spate of student demonstrations sparked by lecturers not turning up in class as a result of failure by the university administration to pay their arrears.
After the November closure, Museveni set up a committee to investigate and find solutions to the rampant student and lecturer strikes at the university.
