NEW DELHI, Dec. 31 (Xinhua) -- The Chief Minister of northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav was sacked by his father Mulayam Singh Yadav from their political party - Samajwadi Party (SP).

Akhilesh's expulsion along with party general secretary Ram Gopal Yadav was announced by senior Yadav at a hurriedly called press conference in Lucknow Friday evening.

"We are expelling both Akhilesh and Ram Gopal from the party for six years," senior Yadav told media. "Both of them showed indiscipline. This is to send a strong message that indiscipline won't be tolerated."

Both the sacked leaders have been stripped of their party posts and were served show cause notice.

"I made Akhilesh chief minister and now he does not even consult me," senior Yadav said, adding that he was sacking the son to "save the party".

The senior Yadav, who is chief of SP, however did not announce who would replace Akhilesh as chief minister of the state.

Elections in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous, would be announced anytime soon in the days to come.

Senior Yadav's move came a day after his son released a list of 235 candidates (mostly Akhilesh's supporters and excluded some of his father's loyalists) for the upcoming local polls in the state. The SP had already announced a list earlier.

Ram Gopal Yadav, cousin of senior Yadav, refused to accept the expulsion and described the step against the constitution of SP.

"The action taken against me is unconstitutional. He (Mulayam Singh) acted even before we could respond to the show cause notice," he told the media.

The bitter feud has brought to fore the rift within Yadav family that has been simmering for some years.

Following Akhilesh's expulsion, hundreds of his supporters gathered outside his residence raising slogans in his support.

It remains unclear whether Akhilesh will step down from the post or announce his own political party.
