ATHENS, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades agreed at a meeting here on Friday to take joint actions on international level regarding the resolution of the Cyprus issue.

The two leaders held talks on the pending issues ahead of a meeting in Geneva in January in a new bid to reach a solution for the reunification of Cyprus island.

"The commitment of both Greece and the Republic of Cyprus to the achievement of a fair and viable solution based on the UN resolutions was reiterated. A decision for taking joint actions on a European and international level was made," read an e-mailed press statement issued from the Greek prime minister's office after the talks.

"There was complete understanding both on issues of substance and procedure," the Cypriot government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides told Greek news agency AMNA.

The latest round of UN-mediated negotiations between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities which started almost two years ago has fuelled hopes that the two sides may reach a settlement this time to end the conflict.
