Seven killed after vehicle rolls down into gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir

SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- Seven people were killed after a vehicle they were travelling in skidded off a mountainous road and fell into a deep gorge in Indian-controlled Kashmir, local police said Thursday.

The accident took place Wednesday night at a village in Kishtwar district, about 275 km south of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

Following the accident, police officials and locals rushed to the spot to carry out rescue operations.

The deceased in the accident included the driver of the vehicle, police said.

Deadly road accidents are common in India often caused by overloading, bad road conditions and reckless driving.

Last year 146,133 people were killed and 500,279 others injured in 501,423 road accidents across India, said a report released by India's Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

Global Road Safety Report 2015 released by the World Health Organization said however that India accounts for more than 200,000 deaths annually due to road accidents.
