HARARE, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least 21 people were killed and 58 others injured in road traffic accidents during Christmas and Boxing Day in Zimbabwe compared to 14 that died during the same period in 2015.
Police attributed most of the accidents to speeding and overtaking errors.
"Speeding remains the main cause of the fatal road traffic accidents that were recorded this year," police national spokesperson Paul Nyathi was quoted as saying by the state-owned Herald newspaper on Wednesday.
He said no major fatal road accidents were recorded on the country's highways, although the 16 deaths recorded on Christmas Day alone this year compared to four last year were a cause for concern.
He urged motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol and traveling at night.
Most roads including highways in Zimbabwe are in a poor state due to lack of funds for upgrading and maintenance. Enditem
