Vietnamese deputy prime minister visits Laos to enhance bilateral ties

VIENTIANE, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh paid an official visit to Laos from Saturday to Monday to enhance bilateral relations and cooperation, said a press release by the Lao Foreign Ministry on Tuesday.

During a meeting held between Minh and Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith here on Monday, both sides reviewed the cooperation between the two countries as well as between the two ministries over the past years.

They also discussed future cooperation, especially in the fields of politics, economics and border issues, and exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest.

In 2017, the governments of Laos and Vietnam will organize activities to mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

After the bilateral meeting, President of Vietnam's Diplomatic Academy Nguyen Vu Tung presented an honorary Ph.D degree on international relations to Lao Foreign Minister Saleumxay with the attendance of Minh and relevant officials from both sides.

During the visit, Minh and his delegation also met with Lao President Bounnhang Vorachit, Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith, and President of the National Assembly Pany Yathortou, said the press release.
