Yearender: Top 10 Chinese athletes of 2016

BEIJING, Dec. 26 (Xinhua) -- Following are the top 10 Chinese athletes of the year of 2016 voted by Xinhua News Agency:

1. Zhu Ting (Volleyball)

Zhu helped the Chinese women's volleyball team reclaim the Olympic title after 12 years. The 22-year-old spiker was also voted as the Most Valuable Player at the event.

2. Guo Chuan (Sailing)

Guo is the pioneer of Chinese sailing. The 51-year-old has been missing since Oct. 25 this year while attempting to break the world record for crossing the Pacific alone.

3. Ke Jie (Go chess)

Ke won the Mlily Cup in January and won the Samsung Cup finals in December this year. The 19-year-old has become one of the most famous Go chess players in the world.

4. Sun Yang (Swimming)

Sun, 25, won the men's 200m freestyle gold medal and the 400m freestyle silver medal at the Rio Olympic Games.

5. Zhong Tianshi/Gong Jinjie (Cycling)

Zhong, 26, and Gong, 31, won the women's team sprint track at the Rio Games, which was China's first ever Olympic cycling gold.

Earlier in the year, Zhong beat teammate Lin Junhong to win the women's sprint at the track world championships.

6. Ding Ning (Table tennis)

Ding, 26, swept the women's singles and team gold medals at the Rio Olympics to complete a "Grand Slam" of Olympic, world championships and World Cup singles titles.

7. Zhao Shuai (Taewondo)

Zhao, 21, won China's first Olympic gold in men's taewondo when he triumphed in the 58-kg category at the Rio Olympics.

8. Han Tianyu (Short track speedskating)

Han won China's first ever men's 1,500m title at the world championships. The 20-year-old also collected the men's overall and 5,000m relay titles at the worlds.

9. Wang Zhen (Race walking)

Wang, 25, won the men's race walking event at the Rio Games to become the third Chinese man to win an Olympic athletics title after Liu Xiang and Chen Ding.

10. Chen Aisen (Diving)

Chen became the first diver to win both the men's individual and synchronized platform titles in Olympic history at the Rio Games. The 21-year-old was also voted as the best male diver of the year by world swimming governing body FINA.
