Macao population over 650,000: by-census

MACAO, Dec. 23 (Xinhua) -- Macao's population by-census in 2016 showed that its population totaled 650,900 in August 2016, increasing 17.8 percent compared with the number in 2011 census, the special administrative region's statistics service said on Friday.

In Preliminary results of 2016 population By-Census issued by Macao Statistics and Census Service on Friday, average annual population growth rate was 3.3 percent over the past five years, higher than the average growth of 1.9 percent during 2006 to 2011.

Non-resident workers living in Macao rocketed by 68.8 percent from 2011 to 105,200. Local population excluding non-resident workers and foreign students totaled 536,400, up by 10.5 percent.

Median age of the total population grew from 37.0 in 2011 to 37.5 in 2016 whereas that of the local population rose by 0.7 year to 38.8.

Number of households reaches 188,600, up by 10.4 percent compared to 2011. Male and female populations totaled 314,000 and 336,800 respectively, accounting for 48.2 and 51.8 percent of the total population. Gender ratio was 93.2 males per 100 females, a slight increase from 92.3 in 2011.

The youth (aged under 14) totaled 77,900, comprising 12.0 percent of the total population, similar to that in 2011. The adult (aged from 15 to 64) totaled 513,600, accounting for 78.9 percent. The elderly (aged above 65) totaled 59,400, accounting for 9.1 percent.

Among the total population, 284,100 were born in Chinese mainland, accounting for 43.6 percent of the total, and 265,100 were born in Macao accounting for 40.7 percent.
