LAGOS, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- About 50.8 percent of road accidents in Nigeria were caused by tyre-burst, a top official with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said Thursday.
Saddiq Abdul-Rahman, the FRSC's Unit Commander of Lagos Island, said this in his speech to motorists and commercial bus drivers at the annual Safety Campaign at the Obalende Motor Park in Lagos.
Abdul-Rahman said the campaign was aimed at educating motorists on tyre safety.
He added that FRSC had also collaborated with the Nigeria Custom Services (NCS) to ensure that imported tyres were totally banned from the country.
He advised artisans and commercial drivers to ensure that they fixed new tyres to their vehicles for safety.
Road accidents take place frequently in Nigeria due to reckless driving, bad road conditions and over packing. More than 1,000 are killed on the road each year in the country. Enditem
