BUCHAREST, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) -- The Social Democratic Party won Romania's parliamentary elections by winning more than 45 percent of the votes, more than double the votes garnered by its main adversary Liberals, official results showed Thursday.

According to the Central Electoral Bureau, the Social Democrats obtained 45.47 percent of the votes in the Deputies' Chamber, the lower house of parliament, and 45.67 percent in the Senate.

The Social Democrats has a significant lead over the National Liberal Party, which won the second most votes, with 20.04 percent of the votes in the Deputies' Chamber and 20.41 percent in the Senate.

The Save Romania Union, a party founded several months ago by the mathematician and former civic activist Nicusor Dan, won 8.87 percent of the votes and 8.92 percent for the Deputies' Chamber and the Senate, respectively.

Other parties that crossed the 5-percent threshold required for parliamentary seats were the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, the Liberal Democratic Alliance and the People's Movement Party.

A coalition government will be inevitable after the elections on December 11, as no political party gets an absolute majority of votes for forming a one-party cabinet, according to local analysts. They believed that the most likely scenario would be a coalition government composed of the Social Democratic Party and the Liberal Democratic Alliance.
