LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced 91 original songs and 145 scores in contention for nominations of the 89th Academy Awards on Tuesday.
These original songs and scores come from eligible feature-length films released in 2016.
Several films have multiple chances for representation in the Original Songs category, including "What Happened Last Night" with four eligible songs, and the musical "La La Land" and holiday movie "Believe" with three apiece.
During the nominations process, all voting members from the music branch of the academy receive a reminder list of works submitted in both categories and a compilation of clips. They watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in each category.
Only the five songs and scores received the highest number of votes will be shortlisted for final voting.
Eligible songs and scores must be original and written specifically for the film, according to the academy's rules.
Academy Awards nominations will be announced on Jan. 24, 2017, and the Oscars will be handed out on Feb. 26.
