Rare fern species found in world heritage site in Vietnam

HO CHI MINH CITY, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- A rare fern species has been spotted in Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, a World Natural Heritage site in central Vietnam, the parks management board said Monday.

Scientists from the park in Quang Binh Province, from the Vietnam Museum of Nature and from the Missouri Botanical Garden in the United States have found the fern, Polystichum quangbinhense, inside a karst cave at an elevation of 120 m with humid and shady conditions.

The rare fern species recently found in the national park is classified as critically endangered following Red List criteria set by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
