Singaporean leaders convey condolences over twin bombs in Istanbul

SINGAPORE, Dec. 12 (Xinhua) -- Singaporean leaders conveyed condolences to their Turkish counterparts over the twin explosions near the Besiktas Football Stadium in Istanbul, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement on Monday.

Singapore's President Tony Tan Keng Yam has written to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to express sincere condolences, said the ministry.

President Tan wrote that Singapore condemns these ruthless acts of terror, and stands in solidarity with Turkey and its people during this difficult time.

Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has written to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim to convey condolences on behalf of Singapore government.

PM Lee said he was shocked by the twin explosions near the Besiktas Football Stadium in Istanbul, which has claimed the lives of Turkish policemen and civilians.

"On behalf of the Government of Singapore, I convey my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish those injured a quick recovery," said Lee.

Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs Vivian Balakrishnan also wrote to his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.

Balakrishnan said that the attacks were deplorable. "This brutal attack is yet another reminder of the threats we face today, and the need to work together to combat extremism," he added.

The twin bombs in Istanbul on Dec. 10 killed 38 people and wounded 155 people.
