"Toni Erdmann" by director Maren Ade wins European Film Awards

WARSAW, Dec. 11 (Xinhua) -- "Toni Erdmann," written and directed by Maren Ade, swept this year's European Film Awards, winning five awards, including for best film, director, and screenwriter, Polish Press Agency (PAP) reported Sunday.

The film also won the award of best actress for Sandra Hueller and of best actor for Peter Simonischek, according to PAP.

The gala was held as part of events organized in Wroclaw in its function as the current European Capital of Culture.

An honorary award granted by the president of the European Film Academy was conferred upon the recently-deceased Polish film director Andrzej Wajda.

Polish film director Malgorzata Szumowska's "Body/Cialo" won the People's Choice Award 2016 for Best European Film. Radoslaw Ochnio was granted the European Sound Designer 2016 prize for "11 Minutes".

The European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award went to French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere and the European Achievement in World Cinema Award to Irish actor Pierce Brosnan.

Ceremony of the 29th European Film Awards were held Saturday night in Poland's western city of Wroclaw. The Awards annually honor the greatest achievements in European cinema.
