PRAGUE, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Czechian activists protested against the traditional Christmas sale and killing of carp in Prague streets on Saturday.
The activists distributed flyers to the crowd, which claimed that knowledge has revealed that "fish feel pain and stress similarly to dogs".
Carp has been a favorite Christmas Eve meal since the late 19th century in the Czech Republic.
Every year in December, streets and squares in Czech are crowded with large containers filled with water and carps. People will either ask fishmonger to kill the carps at site or buy them alive to kill them at home.
It is customary to put a scale -- symbol of wealth -- under the diners' plates, who then put in their wallets in the hope that it will bring them luck and wealth in the year to come. In the countryside they used to bury them under fruit trees in order to have a good harvest.
