LJUBLJANA, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- Slovenia is set to begin a 265-million-euro project which will upgrade the country's main rail corridor before the end of this year, local media reported on Saturday.

The construction division of state-owned rail operator Slovenian Railways has been picked for works between Celje and the key rail junction at Zidani Most, both to the east of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana, according to the Slovenian Press Agency (STA).

Preparatory works is scheduled to begin this month and the project is slated for completion by the end of 2020, the report said.

The project involves upgrades to the ageing stations in Rimske Toplice, Lasko and Celje in central Slovenia, upgrade of almost 29 kilometers of track and overhead power lines, and modernization of signalling.

The project will upgrade the railway to category D4, which means higher capacity and speed, and better safety, the STA report said.
