HEFEI, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A former official of east China's Anhui Province has been expelled from the Communist Party of China (CPC) for corruption, authorities said Saturday.

Zhang Qingjun, former deputy head of the CPC municipal committee and former mayor of Hefei, capital city of Anhui, has also been removed from his posts for "serious violation of discipline," according to the CPC provincial commission of discipline inspection in Anhui.

While serving his posts, Zhang took gift money and sought commercial benefits for his relatives and friends. He also made personal gains by using advantages of his posts, the commission said, adding that he failed to confess to authorities while being inquired.

Zhang, 52, started working in 1985. He was put under investigation in July.
