TUNIS, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Tunisia committed to tackle corruption by signing a charter on Friday at the closing of the National Congress on the "Fight Against Corruption."

The head of the government Chahed said that the signing of the charter is an important step in the anti-corruption process, adding that it reflects the priority given by the government to this cause.

Chahed also committed to strengthening the legal arsenal in the fight against this phenomenon.

He announced the adoption of several projects on good governance and public transparency such as the law against illicit enrichment and declaration of wealth for members of the Government and representatives of political parties.

The head of the government also said that a new post of anti-corruption adviser would be created within the presidency of the government to develop relations with the parties involved in this campaign.

The fight against corruption was also an investment, as the saved money would be spent on awareness-raising campaigns, said Chawki Tabib, the president of the National Anti-Corruption Authority.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Tunisia, Kebir Alaoui, said "Tunisia has no excuse for not fighting corruption."

"The economic agenda that Tunisia had put in place for the year 2020 could, unfortunately, be called into question if corruption continues," he warned.
