Nearly 100 people killed by road accidents in Laos in November

VIENTIANE, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 100 people were killed in road accidents in Laos during November, while some 750 others sustained injuries, according to a report of the Traffic Police Department under Lao Ministry of Public Security on Friday.

The report showed that 455 road accidents occurred nationwide in November, resulting in 98 fatalities. As many as 815 vehicles were damaged, costing over 6 billion kip (over 735,474 U.S. dollars).

Previously in October, 447 accidents occurred, in which 77 people were killed, 762 people were injured and 808 vehicles were damaged. The report highlighted the large increase in the number of fatalities from 77 to 98. The majority of accident victims were aged 21-25, local Vientiane Times cited the report.

Among the injured people, 112 were left in critical conditions, 309 were seriously injured and 329 people were slightly injured. Meanwhile, 34 vehicles were written off, 421 sustained moderate damage and 360 vehicles had minor damage, according to the report.

Capital Vientiane topped the list with 135 accidents, claiming 24 fatalities, while 252 people were injured and 198 vehicles were damaged. The capital was followed by central Savannakhet province with 53 accidents, 12 deaths and 73 people injured.

Over-speeding and drunk driving were among major causes of traffic accidents in Laos, according to traffic police.
