MANAMA, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- British Prime Minister Theresa May announced on Wednesday an investment of three billion British pounds (about 3.79 U.S. dollars) in defence in the Gulf region over the next decade.

The announcement was made when May spoke during the 37th Summit of Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC) in Bahrain.

"Now more than ever, Gulf security is our security," said May.

"That's why we are investing in hard power there, with over three billion pounds of defence over the next decade -- spending more in the Gulf than in any other region of the world."

She said the partnership aimed at developing the Gulf defence capacity, capability and interoperability, including for humanitarian and peace support operations.

May said "In all of these ways, I am determined to step up our defence and security partnership to provide greater confidence and stability to the region and to keep our people safe in an ever more dangerous world."

The two-day GCC summit was held in Bahrain on Tuesday and Wednesday.
