BUCHAREST, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Over 90 percent of Internet users in Romania will buy Christmas gifts online with an average spending amount of 190 euros, according to a European study released Tuesday by an express delivery company.

The survey, conducted by DPD group, reflected the developed appetite of Romanians for online shopping, as 93 percent of respondents said they would purchase gifts online for their loved ones, Lucian Aldescu, CEO of DPD Romania, was quoted as saying by official Agerpres news agency.

"Thus, our country is at the forefront of countries with the highest intention to purchase online at Christmas," said Aldescu.

Of the 21 European countries surveyed, Romania stands at half the average amount they intend to spend on Christmas gifts online, but nonetheless surpass countries with stronger economies and more developed e-commerce, such as the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal and Hungary.

Top gifts that Romanians will put under the Christmas tree are dominated by beauty products, preferred by 55 percent of respondents, while shoes, video games, sports and appliances would be gift options for less than 20 percent of those surveyed.

According to the survey, 43 percent of Romanians will budget more for gifts this year. Romanians are followed in the top spot by Lithuanians, while the opposite is Germany, where only 14 percent of Internet users will allocate bigger budgets for surprises under the tree.

According to the study, those aged between 18 and 34 years have the largest presence in e-commerce, accounting for 45 percent of those buying Christmas gifts online, adults between 35 and 54 years account for 40 percent.
