Austrian gov't confirms Van der Bellen to be next president

VIENNA, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- Austrian Interior Minister Wolfgang Sobotka here on Tuesday announced Austria's Green Party-backed candidate Alexander Van der Bellen beat right-wing candidate Norbert Hofer in the presidential election on Sunday.

Van der Bellen won 53.79 percent of votes, the minister said, including the postal ballots which were revealed on Tuesday, beating Freedom Party of Austria (FPO) candidate Hofer.

Hofer on Sunday conceded defeat via a Facebook post.

Austria's president traditionally plays a ceremonial role, but the president does have the power to dissolve the National Council, the lower house of parliament, under the constitution.
