BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China on Tuesday commended Uzbekistan for its smooth presidential elections, and extended congratulations to Shavkat Mirziyoyev on his successful presidential bid.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said that China respected the choice of the Uzbek people, and supported Uzbekistan's chosen path of development, which suits its own national conditions.

Lu said that China is confident that Uzbekistan will maintain political stability and prosperity, and achieve new developmental progress.

Noting that China and Uzbekistan have seen sound bilateral development, Lu added that China values the traditional friendship and cooperation with Uzbekistan, and will work with Uzbekistan to expand strategic coordination, and increase cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative.

Earlier Monday, the Central Election Commission of Uzbekistan announced that Mirziyoyev secured 88.61 percent of all votes in Sunday's presidential elections, making him head of state following the death of late leader Islam Karimov in September.
