BEIRUT, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) -- Lebanon thwarted a drug smuggling operation through Beirut's port and detained four suspects, the Lebanese Finance Ministry announced Friday.

The port inspectors found 300 kilograms of hashish in a container heading to Egypt, said the ministry statement.

It added that the customs agent handling the container's documents and the truck driver were detained at the scene, while the owner of the hashish was arrested after an investigation.

The Anti-Drug Bureau also "raided a depot owned by the suspect in the Mount Lebanon town of Aramoun."

The Lebanese authorities arrested the owner of the export company used to ship the drugs in Beirut's Barbir area.

The statement also revealed a case in which "7,760 pills of Captagon were confiscated from a shipment intended for Saudi Arabia through Lebanon post." The pills were hidden inside a package that contained baby clothes.

Investigations revealed that the package was sent by a Syrian national at a Lebanon post office, his whereabouts still unknown.
