Singapore's orchid hybrid named after Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi

SINGAPORE, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi attended a ceremony at the Singapore Botanic Gardens with Singapore's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, where a new orchid hybrid "Papilionanda Aung San Suu Kyi", was named in Suu Kyi's honor, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in a statement.

MFA said Suu Kyi also met Singapore's Acting President J Y Pillay on Thursday morning, where she provided an overview of the Myanmar government's domestic preoccupations, particularly in the areas of job creation, infrastructure, education, electricity generation, and public health.

Singapore's Emeritus Senior Minister (ESM) Goh Chok Tong and Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) Teo Chee Hean hosted Suu Kyi to breakfast and lunch respectively.

MFA said that ESM Goh and Suu Kyi discussed Myanmar's economy and the areas where Singapore businesses could contribute to Myanmar's development.

Over lunch, DPM Teo and Suu Kyi exchanged views on security and social issues including the importance of education, and equipping youth with the right skills for jobs, said MFA.

MFA revealed that Suu Kyi also received a briefing by the Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau.

In the evening, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Suu Kyi co-officiated at the opening ceremony of the "Cities and Kings: Ancient Treasures from Myanmar" exhibition at the Asian Civilizations Museum, added MFA.

Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi made an official visit to Singapore from Wednesday to Friday.
