PARIS, Dec. 1 (Xinhua) -- French customers bought 163,170 units of cars in November, up 8.5 percent year on year from a year earlier, owing to improved economic climate and more household spending, the French car sales federation (CCFA) said Thursday.

Sales of French brands rose by 8.3 percent year on year last month thanks to sharp growth in sales of Renault Group, the federation said in its monthly report.

Renault, the country's second largest car maker, saw its sales surging by 23.3 percent last month, according to CCFA.

PSA Peugeot Citroen, France's largest automaker, sold 2.8 percent less new cars last month.

In November, foreign auto brands sold a total of 78,937 units in France, up 8.8 percent from 72,538 units registered in the same period last year.
