WINDHOEK, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has a 46/50 gender representation in parliament and is striving to reach the required 50/50 by 2030, a minister said Wednesday.
There are 48 female parliamentarians in the National Assembly and 10 in the National Council.
The Southern African Community Gender Protocol that was ratified in 2015 expects member states to implement the 50/50 gender representation in all sectors.
Addressing the two-day Gender Links Southern African Community Protocol summit in Windhoek Wednesday, gender minister Doreen Sioka said Namibia is on the right path.
Gender Links is a Southern African NGO committed to realizing a region in which women and men are able to participate equally in all aspects of public and private life.
According to Sioka, despite the progress Namibia has made, there is a need to make support structures available to women in politics and decision-making positions.
"We need to fast-track our actions and mobilize women, as well as provide training for women to stand for their human rights," Sioka said. Enditem
