Thousands of patients stranded in Sri Lanka as doctors launch strike

COLOMBO, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka's medical services came to a standstill islandwide on Wednesday as thousands of state doctors took part in a strike against certain proposals mentioned in the government's budget for 2017.

The Government Medical Officers Association said that more than 15,000 doctors were involved in the strike in more than 900 hospitals across the country.

However the strike was not carried out in maternity and children hospitals and the Maharagama Cancer Hospital in the capital.

Officials from the Health Ministry said that thousands of patients were stranded without medical facilities and the Ministry itself was informed of the strike at the "last moment".

The strike which commenced on Wednesday morning will end after 24 hours.
