Greece reports lowest number of new HIV cases

ATHENS, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Ahead of the World Aids Day on Dec. 1, Greek health authorities on Tuesday said the number of new HIV cases recorded so far in 2016 is the lowest in the past five years.

According to statistics released by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO), a total of 453 new diagnoses of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, were recorded from the start of 2016 until October.

In 2015, the number of new infections stood at 691 and in 2014 at 761. The total number of HIV positive patients recorded in Greece since the 1990s currently has reached 15,795 people, including 3,923 who are now suffering from AIDS.

Over the past 25 years, a total of 2,662 AIDS-related deaths have been recorded in Greece.
