BANGKOK, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- Thailand's cabinet has submitted the issue of appointment of a new king to the parliament, Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said on Tuesday.

Prawit told reporters after a special cabinet meeting that the cabinet has already submitted the appointment of Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn as the new king to the parliament, or National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

Everything is in the process and "we expect an audience (with the prince) within the next one to two days," he added.

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said after the death of revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Oct. 13 that Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn asked for an appropriate time to ascend the throne.

According to procedures outlined in the constitution, the cabinet has to notified the president of the parliament that the late king had designated an heir apparent, after which the president will convene members for acknowledgement and will invite the heir apparent to ascend the throne.

The crown prince will then have to accept the invitation in order for him to be proclaimed the new king.
