Haiti on edge in lead up to election results

Source: Xinhua   2016-11-29 07:15:37

SANTAO DOMINGO, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- The atmosphere in the streets of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince was tense on Monday as the nation awaited the official results of the Nov. 20 presidential elections.

Acting President Jocelerme Privert called for calm at a press conference early in the day, at which he "defended the neutrality of his administration in the electoral process and invited the losers to avoid violence," the daily Haiti Libre said.

"The preliminary results of these elections should in no way compromise the socioeconomic stability of the country," said Privert.

The Voting Tabulation Center (CTV) was still counting the ballots Sunday afternoon, leading to speculation as to whether the Provisional Electoral Council (CEP) would hold to its promise to publish the results Monday.

Capital streets are usually bustling with traffic at the start of the week, but activity was notably subdued.

Hours after the elections, at least two political parties held protests, blocking traffic with burning tires and other roadblocks.
