TIKRIT, Iraq, Nov. 28 (Xinhua) -- At least five policemen were killed on Monday when suicide bombers of the Islamic State (IS) group attacked the city of Samarra in Iraq's northern central province of Salahudin, a provincial security source said.

The attack took place in the afternoon when five suicide bombers infiltrated to the city of Samarra, some 120 km north of Baghdad, and attacked a security checkpoint in the northern part of the city, sparking heavy clashes with the troops, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

At least five policemen were killed and another wounded, the source added.

Authorities in the city imposed curfew, blocked the entrances and tightened security measures the troops, and allied paramilitary Hashd Shaabi units carried out a search operation in the city looking for the suicide bombers, the source added.

Terrorist acts, violence and armed conflicts killed 1,792 Iraqis and wounded 1,358 others in October across Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq said.

Many blame the current chronic instability, cycle of violence, and the emergence of extremist groups, such as the IS, on the U.S., which invaded and occupied Iraq in March 2003.
